At 7:30 in the morning of July 28, the 2019 Liupanshui Summer International Marathon kicked off in Liupanshui. This event was co-sponsored by Chinese Athletic Association, Guizhou Sports Bureau, and the people's government of Liupanshui. Under the theme of "cool marathon in Liupanshui full of happiness", it includes a series of contests such as "I want to compete in the Olympic". Some thirty thousand athletes attended the race to enjoy the passion of long distance running is this city with renowned soft climate.
Before the start of the race, all athletes observe a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in the landslides that happened on July 23.
It was known that this marathon adopts the standards of the IAAF gold label road race events, the CAA gold label road race events, and Chinese Athletics Championships, and offers 4 sports disciplines to 300,000 people, including Full Marathon (6000 people), Half Marathon (5000 people), 10 km (4000 people), and popular jogging (15,000 people). Participants are from around the world, including 455 professional runners (55 foreigners) from 11 countries and regions such as France, Russia, Australia, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia. Most runners are fans of marathon in China, with their ages ranging from 1 to 88 years old.
Since its first session in 2013, the Liupanshui marathon has been successfully held for 6 years, and has attracted over 160,000 athletes from 50 countries and regions. Liupanshui marathon was credited as a gold label road race event for four consecutive years (2015 to 2018), qualified as Chinese Athletics Championship for four consecutive years (2016 to 2019), named a bronze label road race by IAAF in March 2019, and included in the "Run China" marathon activities in June 2019. In addition, Liupanshui marathon is also a key demonstration project of national sports industry accredited by the General Administration of Sport, and a top 10 sports event in 2017 of Guizhou. Zhongshan District is granted the title of "base for marathon training in Guizhou". Liupanshui marathon has become an event with international presence. Over the past six years, Liupanshui marathon brought the people in the city exciting events, and served as an important platform to showcase the sports, tourism and culture of Liupanshui. The marathon culture has been firmly rooted in the mind of Liupanshui people, and has enhanced the social cohesion, and economic and cultural development.
Foreigners performed well in this year's marathon, as always. The top three of male full marathon are all from Kenya. An athlete from Bahrain won the female full marathon, followed by two others from Ethiopia.
The gold winner of male full marathon, and the gold and silver winners of female full marathon set a new record high. Chinese athletes Nie Dengyu, Zhao Hao, Guo Zhongrui, Zhao Na, Niu Lihua and Zhang Kaiqin have come in first, second, and third places in male and female half marathon respectively.
